Saturday Snippets
I've lapsed in the last couple of weeks in sending in my snippets. I was just telling my husband that despite how much I love my jobs, working full-time interferes with my life. I have realized that I tend to put more time into this job without even realizing it. The only time it really feels like work is when I have to deal with one group that I supervise. It is a group of six women, who are just about the most petty, sneaky, conniving, gossipy women I have ever dealt with in the workforce. It just doesn't matter what I do as their supervisor, they are not happy, unless they are miserable.
I did manage to arrange a team-building seminar for the seven of us to attend. This wonderful life-coach has designed a rather interesting seminar based on the book "The New Agreements for the Workplace" which is based on the original book "The Four Agreements". I am rather excited to go through this seminar with them. It won't be until October, but I plan on re-reading "The Four Agreements" before we attend the seminar. I have asked Lori to include the cost of the book for each of us, in the cost of the seminar. I am hoping it doesn't cost too much, but the budget I have is $5000.00 so I am sure this will cover it.
I have also made the decision to move my office over to the building they are working in, as I feel that my physical presence in their work area will put a curb to the gossiping. They are currently working in two different offices, and I am hoping I can get NASA to put us into one large office with cubicles. I have a plan. I want this to be a setting typical to a secretarial pool, so that there is no longer a "division" between the two groups of three. I am adamant that they begin to work as a team. One of the six recently resigned, and I have already replaced her with someone who has a much different attitude. In exit interview form, however, she (the one who resigned) really blasted me as a supervisor, and I was, and still am, upset at some of her accusations. It is interesting that I haven't heard anything from HR regarding her exit interview. Either they are figuring out how to fire me, or they didn't even read it. I feel if they had read it, they would have surely said something to either myself, or my manager. Oh, well, lesson learned, be more attentive to their little tiny grips, even if it is just saying "I hear what you are saying." In thinking about this group, I realize I too tend to let the complaints flow over my back, and go on with things, because they are so many, and it's become so annoying that I just don't want to deal with it. It is an interesting concept of being a "working" manager, and having never done this type of thing before, I realize that I need to rethink my managing style. Their last manager only had the job of managing them, so had all the time in the world to coddle them, and in my own opinion, re-enforced their pettiness, so that now this is their modus operandi.
As to my personal life, we are in the process of preparing to have both bathrooms remodeled. I have been busy picking out tile and vanities for both bathrooms. It's amazing how expensive a taste I really do have. I found a vanity for the master bath that was made out of an old bombe style dresser, however, it was $3000.00. A little too expensive for us. Oh well, I have picked out another one from Home Depot that I like. I think today or tomorrow my husband and I are going to go to Lowe's in Fremont and check them out.
My daughter is loving attending a "real" high school, and somehow, managed to get onto the cheerleading squad without even trying out. (Tryouts were in May) She's very happy, and we order her uniform on Tuesday. The last two years her uniforms for her old school totaled to almost $2000.00 each year, so I was concerned about how much they were going to have me put down, and arranging a payment schedule. However, this coach doesn't believe in spending alot on the uniforms, so it's only costing $300.00 total! Last night was their first football game, and she was thrilled to be included, even though she didn't have her uniform yet. Hopefully, it will come soon.
Well, off to clean the house, hope all of you have a great long weekend!
